Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring protein found in human skin responsible for acting as a cushioning shock absorber. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are produced by inserting human genetic material into bacteria in a laboratory for the manufacture of dermal fillers such as Juvederm™, Teosyal, Restylane ™and Perlane™. It is a highly “conserved” protein, which means that its genetic composition is almost identical to that of 97% of animal species. This gives the product an extremely low incidence of allergic reactions, thereby ruling out the need for pre-treatment skin testing. If you imagine the skin as a 3-dimensional lattice with the structure mostly composed of collagen and elastin fibres intertwined, then hyaluronic acid is the gel like substance that is found between these structural proteins in the skin that act to cushion them. For this reason, injectable dermal fillers have a very natural feel and cannot be seen since they are clear in colour. Hyaluronic acid is hygroscopic which means that it attracts water very strongly to itself and binds with it, giving a larger volumizing effect than the product would have on its own.
